| Birmingham Libraries actively support the adult basic skills Skills for Life agenda in a number of ways.
Introductions to the range of library services are on offer for groups of learners and individuals. All libraries have a range of graded resources for learners and tutors. There are First Choice collections in 12 libraries and all Birmingham Libraries will have a collection by the end of 2005. Thirteen Reading Groups meet in libraries to talk about books and to share the pleasure and enjoyment of reading.
All frontline staff in libraries have received awareness training about the difficulties literacy problems present in using library services and resources. All Birmingham Libraries have reached the approved standard for information and advice on learning and can help signpost people to appropriate local classes or sources of help.
In partnership with the Adult Education Service and some colleges, basic skills classes take place in a number of libraries. All libraries offer support for using ICT and basic skills courses are available via ICT in the Learning Centres at six libraries and in the Central Library in partnership with Matthew Boulton College.
