Support Staff

  1. Do you understand and are you able to put into practice the key policies within the school?

  2. Are you involved in the annual review of key policies?

  3. Is underattainment/underachievement in Literacy of boys an issue in your school or your class?

  4. Do you consider with the teacher different ways in which your time can be used most effectively during Literacy lessons i.e. during introductory, development and plenary parts of the lesson? E.g.
    • Withdrawal of small group for parallel teaching
    • Undertaking assessments / observations of pupils
    • Prompting pupils
    • Ensuring consistent behaviour
    • Working with different pupils to enable the teacher to focus on those with difficulties.

      • Consider the benefits of using some of your time to release the class teacher to work with SEN pupils. Some schools have found that this has a positive impact on the self-esteem and learning of these pupils.

  5. Are you included in in-service training related to Literacy teaching, behaviour management, SEN etc? e.g.
    • staff meetings
    • courses
    • INSET
    • LSA meetings

  6. Do you ensure that teachers and SMT are aware of your development needs in relation to raising boys’ achievement in Literacy?

  7. Are you familiar with the range of resources available to support boys’ learning?

  8. How is your work with pupils (individuals / small groups) fed back to the teacher to inform future target setting.
