| A series of four leaflets has been developed by a multidisciplinary team including early years workers and speech and language therapists, with support from this Partnership. Parents were consulted during the various stages of the leaflets' development.
The intention was to provide easily readable common messages relating to early language development. The leaflets cover four broad developmental stages from birth to 2-4 year old and are multi-purpose. They are suitable for distribution to parents at antenatal clinics, via health visitor visits, post natal groups, stay and play groups, at the normal regular health checks, via library sessions, via childminders, via preschool groups and through nurseries etc.
The leaflets supportively stress the need to give children time to talk and time to listen and suggest a range of activities to support language development.
Language development is also being pushed forward through the Early Start family language courses being delivered, in a variety of settings, via Birmingham Education Department.
These courses work with parent and child together, in early years contexts, to make sure that language develops more rapidly and in structured ways.
