Unemployment levels in Birmingham are falling to record lows. There are still a number of young people who do not move easily from school to further learning or to employment with training opportunities. New Learning Gateways have been established to ensure that all young people can get the support, advice and assessment they need – including support for their basic skills needs. Young people going through New Deal will be accessing stronger support for their basic skills need. There is growing flexibility around the secondary school curriculum, and more of a focus on vocational skills of young people. Additional support is given to particular groups, including those young people leaving public care; the vulnerable homeless; those with a record of offending etc. What has this ‘Tented City’ to do with key skills?
