  • Unemployment levels in Birmingham are falling to record lows.
  • There are still a number of young people who do not move easily from school to further learning or to employment with training opportunities.
  • New Learning Gateways have been established to ensure that all young people can get the support, advice and assessment they need – including support for their basic skills needs.
  • Young people going through New Deal will be accessing stronger support for their basic skills need.
  • There is growing flexibility around the secondary school curriculum, and more of a focus on vocational skills of young people.
  • Additional support is given to particular groups, including those young people leaving public care; the vulnerable homeless; those with a record of offending etc.
