It gives me great pleasure to introduce this report which shows the very positive impact of the work of the Core Skills Development Partnership within and beyond Birmingham.
Not only has the Partnership met or exceeded all the milestones and targets set by government but it is increasingly gaining national recognition as a partnership that works and is bringing about real change.
The Partnership has been asked to 'showcase' its work at national conferences and is regularly used as an example of good practice.
As far as Birmingham itself is concerned, work developed through the Partnership is emerging in the form of whole city approaches influencing huge numbers of parents, pupils and organisations. |

Our ever more productive relationship with the Basic Skills Agency has enabled us to keep up with the waves of national developments and the Partnership has had a role in shaping some of the emerging national approaches to core skills development.
The Partnership's annual business planning model has proved flexible enough to enable us to absorb and build on very rapid change at a national level in a way that has kept us at the cutting edge of development.
The challenge for the Partnership over the coming years is to further develop our work across agencies and to build on the substantial gains already being made so that the improvements made in Birmingham in the area of literacy and numeracy are maintained and extended.
