A strong feature of the past year has been a commitment to ongoing consultation and communication to ensure that everyone gets the same information and that organisations are kept involved in appropriate ways. Working through existing channels rather than setting up competing ones has put Core Skills Development Partnership activities firmly in their wider contexts. Where existing channels needed supplementing this has been done. For example, whilst the city's Lifelong Learning Forum has been developing, separate meetings have been held with further education college principals. This has created an increased focus on core skills developments within a whole set of organisations.
More than 140 hours of presentations have been made to networks of organisations and key individuals. There has been contact with 411 organisations, in addition to 2,800 standard briefing sheets being issued to ensure that common messages were being received by as wide an audience as possible. |

More than a disjointed set of activities
There is a danger that having got off to a flying start, and supported developments across a broad front, we could have ended up repeating past patterns of supporting lots of disconnected, fragmentary bits of work. The widespread consultations undertaken before the start of the Partnership activities consistently
pointed out the need for such one off sets of activity to be replaced by a more strategic, and system-wide, set of changes to the long-term ways that services are delivered.
During this first year, feedback to the Partnership is very much that we have successfully created more coherence and an increasingly strategic approach to a range of previously discrete activities.
Here are some of the things that people have said over the last year:
"small amounts of money have unlocked an amazing amount of enthusiasm and commitment for new activities"
"complex planning underwritten by simple yet effective systems"
"ambitious attempt to really make a difference"
Things are joining together now in ways that they didn't before"
"we have been inspired about the potential of the changed ways of working" |
